I am shocked by what I have read, a few years ago I took a lost dog to a shelter and said when I dropped him off I'd be happy to take him if owners could not be found I asked them to contact me either way....well I rang them a week later BECAUSE I HAD NOT HEARD ! ......" His owners came and got him" ( something in their tone made me not believe it) I suggested they contact the owner with my phone number so I could check if he was OK. I realy got short shift then," we don't do that," and they hung up! I think we now know what happened to that dog . I will NEVER AGAIN TAKE AN ANIMAL TO A POUND ,ill keep it and put signs up on lamp posts and shop windows or mabee face booketc

Thanks for this timely reminder that this is not ONLY an opportunity to see change at the LDH - it seems to me that we have to take this window of opportunity and re-enforce to the Minister that what really needs to happen is an overall overhaul of animal welfare legislation, including a review of BSL - and that the terms of reference of this investigation should not be limited to assessing the LDH's compliance with the existing (FLAWED) Code of Practice and the Prevention of Cruelty Act - but, if this new Government's stated intentions regarding review of policy and legislation re Animal Welfare are to be believed, and they want to be seen to be catching up with the communities' expectations in this area - the scope or the inquiry must also measure their policies and procedures against "best practice" - namely - the NO KILL EQUATION - because, as you have pointed out, they may be able to somehow 'technically' wriggle out by claiming they 'comply' with existing legislation, the justifiable growing outrage in the community could prove to be the turning point - and a signal to the investigating panel that any kind of 'whitewash' - as in 'they comply so it's OK" simply WILL NOT BE TOLERATED - and now that Smith no longer has his buddy Napthine calling the shots in Spring Street, we can dare to dream that THIS TIME - things ARE going to change - we must all stand up and be counted - and demand that THE KILLING MUST STOP - WE DEMAND THE NO KILL EQUATION!!

Good article. Does what the new Govt promised in the way of 'improvements ' to the AW 'space' impact on the review?. There are gaps in what is in the legislation, so could the review be tied in to upgrading them to align with community expectations?
